What
is a domain name?
A domain name is your unique
identity on the Internet, for example, myname.co.uk.
It is a company's or individuals address on the World Wide Web.
A domain name is used with your web address and email. If your domain name is
mydomain.co.uk your website address would be www.mydomain.co.uk and your email would be anything@mydomain.co.uk

Why
should I have a Domain Name?
A domain name gives you a
unique identity and presence on the Internet. This will provide you with a professional
edge over your competitors. You are not tied to any Internet provider's address which is
always attached in the emails for example yourname@name.isp-name.co.uk. This address says
nothing about you or your company. For businesses it also look very unprofessional in the
eyes of your clients.
The explosion of the Internet has meant that companies have found an excellent cost
effective marketing medium with which they can promote themselves and products on,
especially with the fact that by the end of this century 30% of all credit card
transactions will be processed over the Internet! Because of this phenomenon literally
tens of thousands of domain names are being registered every day.
Even if you are not immediately going to use your domain name it is vital that you secure
it. Otherwise another body may register it before you and possibly build an Internet
presence built around your company's identity!
Because there is no restriction on who can register a domain name some companies and
individuals are in the business of registering 1000's of domains in the notion that they
will sell them on at a higher price to their appropriate buyers
Domain registration starts at only £20.00 + VAT. Register yours now and secure it!

Is
my name available?
Every week, literally
thousands of domain names are being registered. Over 11 million domain names have already
secured internationally. Due to this, it is possible that your first choice domain name
has already been registered. However it is easy to find a very close variant of your first
choice domain name.
For example if your company name was Water
Coolers Ltd and the domain watercoolers.com was already registered by another body then
you might want to try: -
watercoolers.co.uk
watercoolers.net
watercoolers.org.uk
Or
water-coolers.com
watercoolers.com
water-coolers.co.uk
watercoolersltd.co.uk
The above are all very close examples of the
first choice and the company identity is still maintained
You can include numbers in the domain name.
The rate at which domain names are being registered is a strong indication of how
important it is to secure yours.

How
do I choose my Domain?
For any company wishing to create an Internet
presence one important factor is to have a domain name which is easily remembered, without
detracting too much from your company name or individual message.
When choosing a domain name it's important to be aware of the following:
- A domain name can only consist of alphanumeric characters (letters and numbers), a
hyphen (-).
It must begin and end with either a letter or number.
UK domain names must be at least three characters long, e.g ICI.co.uk or B-T.co.uk where
the "-" counts as one character.
A domain name is not case sensitive, so it doesn't matter whether you type in upper or
lower case characters.
The Internet does not recognise gaps between letters or words so they must be removed or
replaced by hyphens in both domain names and email addresses.
It is strongly recommended that you do not use a zero (0) because it can be confused
with an (o)
It is strongly advised that domain names containing trademarks and other intellectual
property rights owned by another party should not be registered without
expressed permission from the owner.
When choosing a domain name there is no fixed rule of thumb, however it is advised that
you keep the domain name short because in general the shorter it is the more memorable
it'll be.

that great name now!
